Harry Kane leads our latest Ballon d’Or 2026 rankings after a remarkable season for Bayern Munich and six goals during England’s run to third place at the World Cup. But this is not a runaway race. World champion Lamine Yamal, tournament standout Rodri and Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé all have compelling arguments of their own.
The winner will be revealed on 26 October 2026 at the London Palladium Theatre, when the Ballon d’Or ceremony leaves France for London for the first time.

That Top Four tells the story of the race rather well. Kane has the most spectacular season-long scoring case. Yamal and Rodri have something he does not: a World Cup winners’ medal. Who Is the Favourite to Win the 2026 Ballon d’Or?
Harry Kane is our current Ballon d’Or 2026 favourite.
And for once, the argument for Kane is not built around what he might achieve.
He has already done it.
The Bayern striker scored 61 goals in 51 club appearances during an extraordinary 2025/26 season. He then took that form to the World Cup, scoring six times as England reached the semi-finals and eventually finished third.
Kane also became England’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer during the tournament.
The question hanging over his candidacy is obvious: can an extraordinary individual season beat a World Cup winner?
Lamine Yamal and Rodri are about to test that theory.

There is a genuine dividing line after the first four.
Kane has the numbers. Yamal has the club season plus the World Cup. Rodri has the tournament’s biggest individual honour. Mbappé has the World Cup Golden Boot.
Kvaratskhelia leads the next group after playing a major role in Paris Saint-Germain’s European success.
1. Harry Kane – Bayern Munich & England
There are seasons in which a striker scores enough goals to make the statistics look slightly absurd. Kane just had one.
His 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern turned an already elite campaign into something exceptional. Add six more goals at the World Cup and the scale of his season becomes difficult to dismiss.
England did not win the tournament, but third place was their best World Cup finish since 1966. Kane also broke the country’s all-time World Cup scoring record along the way.
That matters because one of the traditional arguments against Kane in individual award debates has disappeared: the suggestion that the goals did not come with enough team success or enough defining moments on the biggest stage.
There is still one vulnerability.
Spain won the World Cup.
If voters place enormous weight on that trophy, Kane could lose ground to Yamal or Rodri. But judged across the entire season rather than one tournament, he has an outstanding case.
Our verdict: The player to beat.
2. Lamine Yamal – Barcelona & Spain
At 19, Lamine Yamal has already built the sort of résumé most players would happily retire with.
He won La Liga with Barcelona and then helped Spain become 2026 world champions, adding the World Cup to the EURO title he had already won as a teenager.
His football makes the case more interesting than the trophy list alone.
Yamal can change a match without necessarily scoring. Defenders back away from him, structures shift towards his side of the pitch and spaces open elsewhere simply because he has the ball.
That influence is difficult to capture in one headline statistic.
There is also history on the table. If Yamal wins, he would become the youngest Ballon d’Or winner ever.
The concern is vote splitting. Spain’s World Cup triumph produced several legitimate candidates, including Rodri and Fabián Ruiz. Kane does not face quite the same problem.
Our verdict: The strongest World Cup-backed challenger to Kane.
3. Rodri – Manchester City / Barcelona & Spain
If the 2026 Ballon d’Or were decided on the World Cup alone, Rodri might be No. 1.
Spain won the tournament, and Rodri was named its outstanding player.
That immediately puts the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner back into serious contention.
His case is also a useful reminder that individual awards do not have to belong to forwards. Rodri controls games in a way that rarely produces viral highlight reels but often determines whether his team can play the football it wants to play.
The complication is his club season.
Injuries interrupted his campaign and prevented him from building the same uninterrupted body of work as Kane. That leaves voters with an interesting choice: the most dominant season-long scorer, or the midfielder who became the outstanding player at the biggest tournament in football?
Our verdict: The candidate most likely to rise if voters heavily prioritise the World Cup.
4. Kylian Mbappé – Real Madrid & France
Ten goals.
That is the number keeping Kylian Mbappé firmly in this race.
France did not win the World Cup, but Mbappé finished as its Golden Boot winner with 10 goals, adding another extraordinary tournament to a career already packed with huge international performances.
He has now turned World Cups into his personal stage.
What works against him is the absence of the biggest team trophies. In a field containing a world champion, a Champions League winner and Kane’s extraordinary scoring season, individual brilliance alone may not be enough.
Then again, ten goals at a World Cup are not ordinary individual brilliance.
Our verdict: An outside winner, but an entirely credible Top Four candidate.
5. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – Paris Saint-Germain & Georgia
Kvaratskhelia has one problem the players above him did not have: Georgia failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Normally that would be close to fatal in a World Cup-year Ballon d’Or race.
His club season keeps him relevant.
Kvaratskhelia was one of PSG’s defining attacking players as the French club retained the Champions League, producing the kind of direct, unpredictable performances that make defenders uncomfortable before he even receives the ball.
He therefore represents the strongest version of the club-season argument outside our Top Four.
Can that overcome the lack of a World Cup campaign?
Probably not for first place. But it could still carry him surprisingly high in the final ranking.
6. Lionel Messi – Inter Miami & Argentina
Yes, Lionel Messi is here again.
At this point, that almost feels less surprising than it should.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner led Argentina all the way back to the World Cup final, where their attempt to retain the title ended with a 1–0 extra-time defeat against Spain.
At club level, Messi continued to produce extraordinary attacking numbers for Inter Miami.
A ninth Ballon d’Or would still be a major surprise. But reaching another World Cup final while maintaining elite production at club level is more than enough to make his nomination credible.
There is also a piece of history attached: Messi is now on the Ballon d’Or shortlist for the 17th time.
7. Ousmane Dembélé – Paris Saint-Germain & France
The defending champion has not disappeared.
Dembélé followed his 2025 Ballon d’Or victory with another trophy-heavy season at PSG, including another Champions League title.
His campaign was disrupted by injuries, however, and France’s World Cup ended without the trophy that might have pushed him back towards the very top.
Repeating as Ballon d’Or winner is therefore a difficult proposition.
Still, a player who combines elite attacking production with Champions League success deserves more than a passing mention.
8. Michael Olise – Bayern Munich & France
Michael Olise’s development at Bayern has moved beyond “promising”.
He is now one of Europe’s most productive attacking players.
Goals, assists, one-on-one quality and the ability to create from different areas of the pitch made him a central part of Bayern’s season alongside Kane.
The difficulty for Olise is that his teammate has absorbed much of the individual spotlight.
When two players share the same successful club campaign, the one scoring 61 goals tends to dominate the conversation.
That should not obscure how good Olise has been.
9. Jude Bellingham – Real Madrid & England
Bellingham’s World Cup changed his Ballon d’Or trajectory.
The Real Madrid midfielder scored seven goals, the most ever by an England player at a single major tournament.
For context, even Kane finished the tournament with six.
Bellingham’s combination of midfield influence, goals and major-tournament performances gives him one of the more interesting cases outside the obvious favourites.
England falling short in the semi-final limits the ceiling, but a Top 10 finish would be entirely justified.
10. Erling Haaland – Manchester City & Norway
Haaland scoring huge numbers barely qualifies as news anymore.
That is almost a problem for him.
The Norwegian produced another prolific season and finally had the opportunity to play at a World Cup after Norway qualified for the first time since 1998.
But in a year containing Kane’s numbers, Spain’s triumph and several spectacular individual World Cup campaigns, Haaland lacks one defining achievement that pushes him into the leading group.
He remains one of the world’s most devastating goalscorers. In this particular Ballon d’Or race, that may only be enough for the lower half of the Top 10.

The shortlist creates some interesting talking points.
Kane, Yamal, Rodri and Mbappé all made it, as expected. Lionel Messi has another opportunity to add to his record eight victories.

Fans do not decide the Ballon d’Or.
For the men’s award, an international jury of journalists representing the top 100 countries in the FIFA ranking votes on the nominees.
The assessment is built around three principal areas:

- Team performances and achievements
- Class and fair play
The order matters. Individual performance is the primary criterion.
That is one reason Kane can remain the favourite despite Spain winning the World Cup.

When Is the Ballon d’Or 2026 Ceremony?
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place on Monday, 26 October 2026 at the London Palladium Theatre in London.
It will be a historic edition for two reasons.
First, the Ballon d’Or is celebrating its 70th anniversary.
Second, London is hosting the ceremony for the first time.

Still extraordinarily young for a central defender competing at this level, Cubarsí represents one of the more intriguing names on the official list.

Not by a landslide.
